Hail in Missouri — The Show-Me State's Storm Reality
Missouri sits at a geographic crossroads that produces some of the most active severe weather in the United States. The state averages 8 to 12 significant hail events per year, with the heaviest concentration along the I-44 and I-70 corridors.
The St. Louis metropolitan area — including St. Charles, Jefferson, and Franklin counties — experiences consistent hail activity from March through July, with peak severity in April and May. The Kansas City metro sees storms building over the Kansas plains and intensifying as they cross into Missouri.
Missouri's hail climate is notable for the variety of storm types: everything from widespread moderate hail (1–1.25 inch) events covering hundreds of square miles to localized supercell storms producing 2+ inch stones in narrow corridors.
Know Your Rights
Filing Deadline
Your insurance policy typically requires filing within one year of the date of loss. The policy terms control. File promptly after discovery of damage.
Right to Choose Your Contractor
Missouri law does not restrict your right to choose any licensed contractor. Your insurance company may suggest a preferred vendor, but the decision is yours alone.
Contractor Conduct Laws
RSMo §407.725 prohibits contractors from offering to pay or rebate your deductible, negotiating insurance claims on your behalf, or using misrepresentation to obtain contracts.
Cancellation Rights
If your insurer determines work is not a covered loss, you can cancel the contract before midnight on the fifth business day after receiving that written notice.
Prompt Payment Requirements
Missouri law requires insurers to acknowledge claims within 10 business days and make a coverage determination within 30 business days of receiving proof of loss.
DCI Consumer Hotline
Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance: (573) 751-4126 or 1-800-726-7390. File complaints at insurance.mo.gov.

Missouri-Specific FAQ
Common questions from Missouri homeowners about storm damage and insurance.
Does Missouri require roofing contractors to be licensed?
Missouri does not have a statewide contractor licensing requirement, but many municipalities do. St. Louis City, St. Louis County, Kansas City, and most incorporated areas require local contractor licenses, bonding, and insurance. Always verify that any contractor holds the appropriate local licenses for your jurisdiction. SDAT and all SDAT contractor partners maintain all required local licenses and carry comprehensive liability insurance.
How does Missouri hail compare to other states?
Missouri consistently ranks in the top 10 states for hail damage insurance claims by dollar volume. The St. Louis metro alone generates hundreds of millions in hail-related claims in active storm years. The state’s geographic position at the junction of multiple storm tracks means that while individual storms may be less extreme than those in Texas or Oklahoma, the cumulative frequency makes Missouri one of the most impacted states for residential hail damage over any 5-year period.
I live in a historic St. Louis neighborhood. Are older roofs more vulnerable?
Yes. Many homes in neighborhoods like Soulard, Shaw, Tower Grove, and the Central West End have slate or tile roofs that are 50 to 100+ years old. While slate is incredibly durable, it becomes more brittle with age and is susceptible to cracking from hail impact. Historic roofs require inspectors who can distinguish between age-related deterioration and storm damage — a critical distinction for insurance claims. Our inspectors are trained to assess damage on all roofing materials, including historic slate and clay tile.
What about homes in unincorporated St. Louis County?
Unincorporated areas of St. Louis County may have different permitting and contractor requirements than incorporated municipalities. SDAT navigates these jurisdictional differences for you. Regardless of your specific municipality, your insurance rights — including the right to choose your contractor and file claims — are governed by state law and your policy terms, not local ordinances.
Does Missouri have specific rules about insurance non-renewals after storms?
Missouri’s DCI monitors post-storm market practices. Insurers must provide at least 30 days’ notice of non-renewal. If you’re in a high-hail zip code and receive a non-renewal notice, you have options: shop for alternative carriers, contact an independent agent who represents multiple companies, or in extreme cases, access the Missouri FAIR Plan — the state’s market of last resort for property insurance.
